We’re seeing a brand new Snapdragon
processor showing up in some benchmarks that appears to be the successor
to the extremely powerful Snapdragon 800. This APQ8084 CPU scores just
slightly better than Snapdragon 800 devices, so it’s not a major
improvement, but it will reportedly make improvements in other areas
that aren’t easily measured in benchmarks. The Adreno 420 GPU is getting
a 50 mhz clock boost, and it’s getting DirectX 11.1 support. With the
video game industry moving towards more mobile devices, DirectX support
in a mobile CPU like that would be a giant step forward. It will also
support 4k video and 64-bit processing, so we’ll see if there are many
devices that take advantage of that in the next year or so.
You shouldn’t expect this processor to be in
consumer devices anytime soon, but Qualcomm will likely make some
announcements around CES of next year.
